Origins of Escotts in Axbridge

The following documents in Somerset archives may cast light on the origins of my Escott ancestors in the Axbridge area:

  • settlement examination of John Escott 1814
  • settlement examination of Henry Escott age 50 1818. This is presumably Henry Escott, buried in Axbridge aged 60.
  • 11 February 1782 Order for John Escott and Ann his wife to be removed from Compton Bishop to Saint Decumans https://somerset-cat.swheritage.org.uk/records/Q/SR/350/2/30

I’ve written about my attempts to track down the origin of the Escotts at Escotts in Axbridge and the rest of Somerset – Birds of Cressingham (wordpress.com)

Now all I need to do is find time to got the archives and have a look!

Some quarter sessions records

Some documents in the archives for quarter sessions might help paint a picture of life for the Escotts at the time:

  • complaint of Susannah, wife of Charles Criddle (alias Sage) for assault 1828.Then removal orders for Susannah, wife of Charles Criddle (otherwise Sage) to Compton Bishop 1826. And case paper on an assault by Charles Criddle (otherwise Sage) Susanna his wife and Thomas Criddle on Jane, wife of William Weare 1833. Susannah was Susannah Bouden Escott, daughter of Henry Escott (1768-1828) and his wife Spraxy Bowden (1774-1838). https://birdsofcressingham.wordpress.com/2020/10/09/william-escott-and-jane-bowden/
  • Charles Parsons, constable, against William West Stowell and Henry Escott the younger for refusing to assist him 1826
  • information of John Lewis against William Escott for theft of a pair of stays 1827
  • Examination of Edward Offer re two hens he stole from Mr Symons on behalf of John Escott 1829.
  • assault by Charles Hooper on Jane, wife of James Escott, 1847

I found the catalogue entries for the above documents by searching at https://somerset-cat.swheritage.org.uk for Escott, and then selecting documents in the category Axbridge Borough records
