Transcript of a register page for Axbridge

Someone posted a picture of a page of the parish register for Axbridge of baptisms for 1771 and 1772 and burials for 1772-1774. It is much clearer than many other registers of around that time. Here is a screen sheet.

A few things caught my eye:

Links to my ancestors

The following events seem linked to my ancestors:

  • Baptism. 23 June 1771 Rebecca, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Bowden. Thomas was a brother of Samuel and John Bowden, mentioned below.
  • Baptism. 28 November 1771 Mary, daughter of James and Ann Comer. James Comer appears to be a brother of Mary Bowden [née Comer].
  • Baptism. 2 February 1772. Samuel son of Samuel and Praxey Bowden. Samuel (senior) could be a brother of John Bowden, whose daughter was baptised 6 months later.
  • Baptism. 7 August 1772. Jane, daughter of John and Mary Bowden [née Comer]. Jane was my 4 x great grandmother. https://birdsofcressingham.wordpress.com/2020/10/09/william-escott-and-jane-bowden
  • Burial 16 December 1773. Benjamin, son of Thomas and Sarah Bowden. Benjamin was baptised on 27 June 1773.

Other points of interest: baptisms

  • The baptisms include one child of a couple from a nearby parish (21 May 1771 James, son of Jo. & Honor Cox of Cheddar)
  • On 26 December 1771, there was a baptism of someone ‘of riper years’ (ie not a child). Only 2 names are given though (Thomas & Mary Tucker). It isn’t clear whether these are the parents, or the son/daughter and one parent.
  • On March 2, 1772, Mary needless child of Elix. [Elizabeth?] Sprud. Presumably ‘needless’ was one of the euphemisms for ‘illegitimate’.

Other points of interest: burials

  • 1 June 1772. Elizabeth , daughter of William Francis, drummer in the 20th regiment.
  • 18 December 1772. Mr William Lewis, senior burgess, near 83
  • 2 February 1773A poor woman, a stranger from Cheddar.
  • 16 March 1773. Mr Barber, a Londoner, 74
  • 9 June 1773 Mrs Star, widow, near 100.
  • 28 December 1773. The son of a poor woman, a traveller, who called herself Powell.
